WORKS CITED LIST MLA style
MLA format or style refers to guidelines given in The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (5th edition). It is the format most commonly used by colleges and high schools. Copies of this book are available in the HHS library and in most bookstores. Each English teacher also has a copy.
The works cited list appears as the last page of the paper. It provides the information necessary for a reader to locate and be able to read any sources you cite in the paper. Each source you cite in your paper MUST appear in your works cited list. This page may also be called a bibliography if all sources cited are print sources.

Basic guidelines for the works cited list
1. Title the page as follows: Works Cited
2. Use reverse indention with each entry. The first line should be flush with the left margin.
Each line after that should be indented one-half inch.3. All references should be double-spaced.
4. Capitalize each word in the titles of magazine articles, books, etc. However, this rule
does not apply to articles (a, an, the), short prepositions, or conjunctions unless one is the
first word of a title or subtitle.5. Italicize or underline titles of books, journals, magazines, and films.
6. Order the sources alphabetically by the author's last name. If there is no author listed,
alphabetize by the first letter of the first item given for the work.7. If a work has more than one author, invert only the first author's name, follow it with a
comma, then continue listing the rest of the authors--giving their names in regular order.8. If you have cited more than one work by a particular author, order them alphabetically
by title, and use three hyphens in place of the author's name for every entry after the
first.9. If no author is given for a particular work, alphabetize by the title of the piece and use a
shortened version of the title for the parenthetical documentation.
